A Better Model
Romans 8:28 (NRSV)-
28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.
In the context of 1 Samuel 24, over the last several days, these thoughts have focused on conflict resolution.
As we dug into the necessity of conflict resolution, we looked at David’s relationship and conflict with Saul. In doing so, we saw that David had to have a change of heart, make the first move, confront the factors of the conflict head-on, clarify his intentions, and seek true reconciliation.
David is a great example of what true reconciliation looks like in real time. He resisted harming Saul and he sought the good of his enemy. And, we have much to learn from David’s selflessness.
However, like all of us, there were times in David’s life where he thought it was about him and he was not always the best character model.
There is a model of character and an example that is greater than David. That model is Jesus Christ, who, at infinite cost to Himself pursued us by dying and rising in our place. And, although we were enemies with God, since Christ moved first, God resisted harming us. Not only that, but
through Christ’s character and humility, God is committed to our good in all things.
Today, since works all things together for good, let’s follow Christ’s example and move toward each other with humility and patience understanding that it is not about us.
Father God, thank you for the humility, character, selflessness, loving-kindness, and the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Please teach us to follow His example by patiently setting aside our differences and moving closer to one another. In doing so, please teach us to resolve our differences. And, please guide us to experience the joy of conflict resolution and the peace of true reconciliation. In His name, we pray. Amen!
