Timeless Truth

Psalm 119:9-16 (NRSV)-

9 How can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word. 10 With my whole heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments. 11 I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. 12 Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes. 13 With my lips I declare all the ordinances of your mouth. 14 I delight in the way of your decrees as much as in all riches. 15 I will meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways. 16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

The Bible has Sixty-Six books, was written over thousands of years, was compiled together, and can be a bit overwhelming.

Within the pages of God’s word, we find letters, stories, proverbs, poetry, genealogies, and prophecy. To some, the Bible is just stories of people who died long ago. However, it is so much more than that- if we let it come into our hearts and minds.

Through his Word, God speaks to us and reveals his wisdom and truth. So, if we approach it as a living and active component of our lives, it can change everything. To this end, the Psalmist asks, “How can young people keep their way pure?

The Psalmist’s question could really be the question of any part of our lives. That is, we could ask, “How do I keep true to my promises?” “How do I love a difficult friend?” And, “How do I minister to those around me?”

Regardless of the question, the answer is the same, “By living according to your word.” That is, God’s word contains the answer. So, by reading and memorizing Scripture, God’s word fills our hearts with wisdom. In doing so, it shows us how to respond to any situation, it teaches us who we are as God’s children, and deepens our relationship with him.

Today, let’s go deeper in our relationship with God, by spending time with the living and active power, wisdom, truth, comfort, and joy of his word.

Father God, thank you for the life-giving power of your word. Please teach us to spend time with it. Please guide us to embrace its joy, comfort, and wisdom. And, please help us to use it to overcome any situation or life-circumstance. In doing so, please change and transform us through its timeless truth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
