Two Lenses

Psalm 19:1-9 (NRSV)-

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard; 4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy, and like a strong man runs its course with joy. 6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and nothing is hid from its heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Have you ever seen an amazing sunset, the Grand Canyon, or a beautiful and majestic mountain scene?

There are so many things in nature that give us pause and make us say, “Wow!” And, all of creation points to the Creator. To this end, the Psalmist writes, “The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.”

There is something about admiring God’s handiwork in nature that reminds us we are not accidents, and that our God is an awesome God. And, creation is not the only thing God uses to show us his awesome power, grace, and love.

God gave us his word to tell us who he is, who we are, and how much he loves us. So, no matter how many times we read the Bible, it never changes and always has something valuable for us.

God’s word is perfect, refreshing to the soul, and gives us wisdom and joy (Psalm 19:7-9). As such, his word is true and will always be confirmed by his creation.

Today, as we venture out and enjoy summer in nature, let’s remember that God is gracious to give us both creation and his word as different lenses to see the same truths about him.

Father God, thank you for giving us the lenses to bear witness to your truth. Thank you for the beauty of creation and the constant reminder that we are not alone. And, thank you for the life-transforming power of your word. As we go deeper in relationship and fellowship with you, please guide us to view you through both the lenses of nature and the eternal truth of your word. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen!
